Abandoned Shopping Cart
by Nora Casey

Is there anything sadder than
an abandoned shopping cart
in the bushes
under a freeway overpass?

The abandoned shopping cart is
old,
rusty,
dirty.

But the Walmart logo is still on the front of it,
in faded blue and off-white,
that once said
“Big bright store here.
Come on in and
buy something.
All good stuff,
even if it did come from China.”

I drive on past, but
it leaves me wondering:

Who abandoned that shopping cart there?
A homeless person?

Thoughts while driving on:

Homelessness.
Hardship.
Desperation.
Cold weather.
Wet weather.
The failures of our society.
My failures.

Am I to blame?
