Stones Break Bones
by
Celeste Chimera

We used to believe in the hardness of things
The edges that showed themselves against the light
But do those things exist?

We live in a world of insubstantial weight now
Words fly silently on airy wings
Arrive as if they never left the hands that spoke them

You think you see me, but you don't
I am as vaporous as any other figment of your imagination
I make myself between the lines
Appear in various configurations
You think you know me
But you don't

There's no substance here
Nothing hard like bone
Or sharp as steel
Nothing real at all
And yet you come to play
When your strength is full, you come to play
Retreat when you're feeling weak
You seem to know that even virtual stones can hurt you
