The Voice
by Madison Jacques Casey

The Voice said:
do not listen to me.

I said:
why not?

The Voice said:
those who speak
tell lies.

I said:
All?

The Voice said:
There is unreliability
in any first-person utterance.

I said:
All?

The Voice said:
It is in the nature
of man
to betray oneself,
to defy
the reality,
and
reject the fact
that
we are mortal.

Therefore,
we lie.
