Rae Armantrout is a really interesting poet. She teaches poetry at U Cal San Diego. She is considered to be out of the "Language Poets" group, and is one of the better known postmodern poets. The Language Poets are an avant garde group that emerged in the 60s (of course), but their poems often look back to Joyce, Stein, and the beat poets.

Here is an example poem of hers that has that beat feel to it:

RIDDLE

this same riddle:
IS IT ALRIGHT?
qualm that persists
on the bus ride
"Tonight there's
the movie"
a woman soothes her son
but even in an audience
comes -
was it the first thought?
ALRIGHT NOW? you - grim crowd
you - family
of
nerves
OR NOT

: It's great that Paul Harding won the Pulitzer prize for fiction despite the fact that only a few hundred copies of his book were printed by a literary magazine publisher. But as usual everybody has overlooked the fact that the Pulitzer winner for a book of poetry was won by, of all things, a California Poet. To read more about the poetry winner, Rae Armantrout, read this review at the NY Times.
